A forum for a peaceful Korean unification

A forum for a peaceful Korean unification was held on April 11, 2013 at the Harvard Hilles Library. The event was hosted by the National Unification Advisory Council-ROK and co-administered by the NUAC-Boston Chaper, Harvard University Human Rights in North Korea, and the Harvard Kennedy School North Korea Study Group. Jin-Sup Hong, the president of the NUAC Boston Chapter, gave the welcoming remarks and Kang-Ho Park, the ROK Consul General of Boston, gave the congratulatory remarks.

Stephen Bosworth, the dean of Tufts University’s Fletcher School, gave the keynote speech. The evening was divided up into two panels. “A New North Korea Policy for the ROK and the United States” was the topic for the first Panel. Dr. Jeong-Woo Kil, a member of the ROK National Assembly, was the first to discuss this issue. Dr. Robert King, a U.S. Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights Issues, Dr. Ho-Yeol Yoo, a Korea University professor, Dr. Sang-Hwa Chung, a Research Fellow for the Sejong Institute, and Dr. Marcus Noland, director of the Peterson Institute for International Economics, discussed afterwards about the same issue regarding North Korea.

“Reinforcing the ROK-US Alliance: Continuity and Change” was the topic for the second Panel. Dr. Jung-Hoon Lee, a Yonsei University professor, was the first to speak about the topic. Dr. Kathleen Stephens, a U.S. Foreign Service officer-Career Minister, Dr. Sung-Yoon Lee, a Tufts University professor at the Fletcher School, Dr. Hyun-Seok Yu, a Kyunghee University professor, and Dr. Nicholas Eberstadt, Henry Wendt Chair, further discussed the topic. A forum-like question and answer section followed after each of the panels.

4월 11일 행사를 마친 민주평통 보스톤 협의회(회장 홍진섭)측은 4월 12일 금요일 12시 가야에서 모임을 가졌다. 12일 이날 모임에는 본지 뿐 아니라 뉴잉글랜드 지역 주요 한인인사들도 많이 제외된 듯해 좋지 않은 인상을 받았다고 참석자들은 전해왔다. - TGT-
